Salt Lake City Justice Court Docket Information

The Salt Lake City Justice Court sits within the Third Judicial District and serves as the entry point for most criminal and civil matters originating inside city limits. The court holds jurisdiction over Class B and C misdemeanors, traffic violations, infractions, and small claims cases up to the statutory limit. Every case filed with the court generates a docket, which is the official running record of all proceedings, filings, hearings, orders, and judgments tied to that case.

Docket records from the Salt Lake City Justice Court are maintained in the Utah state court management system. Most entries are public, meaning any person can request to view them. Some records may be restricted due to expungement orders, sealing by the court, or because the subject is a minor. For standard adult cases, the docket typically shows the case number, parties involved, charges or claims, each hearing date, attorney appearances, and the final outcome of the case.

The court operates at 3690 South 500 East and is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Search Salt Lake City Court Dockets Online

Utah provides a centralized online system for searching court docket records across the state. The Utah XChange portal covers both district courts and justice courts, including the Salt Lake City Justice Court. To use XChange, you can register as a subscriber or pay per search as a guest. As of July 1, 2025, the fee is $0.35 per search and $1.00 per document view. A monthly subscription costs $40.00 and covers up to 500 searches. Guest accounts require a one-time $10.00 setup fee to get started.

XChange lets you search by name, case number, or other identifiers. Results show the case type, filing date, current status, and a list of docket entries. You can also view scanned documents attached to many case files. The system is available around the clock and covers cases filed statewide, so you can look up both Salt Lake City Justice Court records and Third District Court records in a single session without switching platforms.

To search effectively, it helps to have the full legal name of the person or business involved, or the case number if you already know it. Partial name searches return multiple results, so narrowing by court or date range makes it easier to locate the specific docket you need.

  • Full legal name of defendant or plaintiff
  • Case number (if known)
  • Approximate filing date or year
  • Court location (Salt Lake City Justice Court)
  • Case type (traffic, small claims, misdemeanor)

Note: XChange search fees increased on July 1, 2025, and a KSL TV article provides background on why the fees changed and what to expect going forward.

Salt Lake City Court Records and Public Access

Court docket records in Salt Lake City are subject to Utah's Government Records Access and Management Act, commonly called GRAMA. The full text of GRAMA appears at Utah Code Title 63G, Chapter 2. Under that law, court records are generally public, meaning any person can request to view or copy them without needing to explain why. The law also identifies categories of records that are protected or private, including records involving juveniles, sealed cases, and certain victim information.

If you need a certified copy of a court document, you must request it through the court clerk's office. Certified copies carry an official seal and are often required for legal proceedings or for applications that require proof of a court outcome. The clerk's office at the Salt Lake City Justice Court can provide copies for a fee set by the Utah Supreme Court's fee schedule. Bring valid identification and the case number if you have it, as that speeds up the process considerably.

For older court records that predate digital storage, the Utah State Archives holds historical court documents from across the state. The archives are searchable by collection, and staff can assist with locating older Salt Lake City court records not yet digitized. Most modern records from the last two decades are available through XChange or directly at the court clerk's window.

Note: Records that have been expunged by court order are no longer accessible to the public and will not appear in XChange searches or at the clerk's window.

Salt Lake City Court Calendar and Hearing Schedule

The Utah Courts system publishes a free court calendar at utcourts.gov/cal/. This calendar requires no login and no fee. You can search by court, date range, case number, or judge name. The Salt Lake City Justice Court is listed as a searchable location in the calendar system. Results show the hearing type, scheduled time, courtroom assignment, and in some cases a WebEx link for hearings held remotely.

The court calendar is updated daily and reflects confirmed hearing times. If a hearing is continued, vacated, or rescheduled, the calendar will show that change once the clerk processes the update. Checking the calendar the day before any scheduled hearing is a good habit to confirm that the time and location have not changed since you first viewed the schedule.

Parties to a case can also use the MyCase portal at no charge to receive updates and notifications tied to their specific case. MyCase is only available to parties of record, so it is not a general public search tool, but it is a convenient way to stay informed about upcoming hearings without needing to check the calendar manually each time.
